How did HH Equine and Cattle get started?

After spending nearly a decade traveling and working all across the Western U.S., a death in the family brought Sam home to Humboldt County. By that point she had been making a living horseback for 9 years and had no intentions of getting out of the ranching world. However, a job at a local non-profit came up and she soon found herself working with kids and horses for the first time since her 4-H days. The inspiration and drive to teach horsemanship lit like a fire and, once it was combined with the dream of having her own ranch and reconnecting with her family’s heritage, HH Equine and Cattle came to be. This dream is just starting out and has big ambitions and goals; however, the focus has and always will be to create a business that supports the comradery and strength of horses and the ranching community.

Why are we called HH Equine and Cattle?

The H hanging H brand that founded our business is an old family brand. It stands for Harry Harps, who is Sam’s Great-Great-Grandfather. The brand was first registered in the late 1800’s and was originally placed on the right ribs of the family cattle from their ranch in Blocksburg. The brand was eventually passed down to Harry’s granddaughter Nancy Dunn in 1954 and moved to Loleta. Due to time and some health issues with the family the brand and ranch was lost in the early 2000’s. Sam was able to find the original registration and after a few months got it registered in her name in the fall of 2025. The new registration has the brand placed on the right hip so that cattle and horses can now continue to carry it.
